Cycling in Majorca

Majorca over the years has become known as a popular holiday destination for the young and old alike. It boasts a warm, and in the Summer months very hot, climate. It benefits from warm seas, many quiet and isolated beaches and some spectacular scenery. It is also and island that has geared itself up for cycling and welcomes riders of all ability. Therefore, over the years it has become a mecca for cyclist and is used as a winter training camp by both professional and amateur cyclists alike.

Whilst the whole island is a great place to cycle many cyclists choose the North of the island to base themselves as this offers some of the best and most challenging rides. The report details a five day stay in Puerto de Pollensa, a small port about five miles from the historic town of Alcudia. Flying to the capital, Palma it is a relatively short bus ride to the town of Alcudia and then on to Pollensa. The public transport network is very good and easy to use and whilst there are taxis the buses are a quick reliable and cheap way of getting around the island.

On arrival in Pollensa there are a large number of hotels of all types in which to stay. In addition, there are also many cycle hire shops renting all sorts of bikes. In the heart of the town is a Pinerello hire shop which has both entry level and higher-level stocks of the famous Italian bikes. If you want to splash out, they have the very latest bikes you can see being ridden by the pros in the Tour de France.

Suggested timetable:

Day 1 Flight and travel to Puerto de Pollensa

Day 2 Cap de Formensa. A challenging ride that rewards the rider with some spectacular views and the chance to relax in the café at the end of the cap. Expect some steep long climbs and fast descents on this bucket list ride.

Day 3 Bay of Alcudia. An easy relaxing ride that follows the beautiful bay of Alcudia and then ventures into the countryside. Take the time to enjoy the views and take in some of the excellent local cuisine.

Day 4 Sa Colabra. A very challenging ride into the mountains to the popular fishing village of Sa Colabra. This ride is not for the fainthearted and contains long steep climbs and spectacularly fast descents. Used by many professional teams as a training ride it is a must for any keen cyclist.

Day 5 Return to Palma and flight home. Why not try to book a late flight and spend the day exploring the north of the island on foot and by bus. The Caves of Drach, are a very spectacular and popular tourist destination.
